Home Suite Hope (HSH) purchases existing market-value homes and renovates them, as needed, to provide affordable housing options to people in the Halton community. Renovations are determined by the number of residents and facilities required. Each resident has a private bedroom, and each bathroom is shared by two people. The common areas of the home are shared by all who live there.

Residents pay rent at a rate that offsets the carrying costs of the house, including taxes, utilities, insurance, maintenance and HSH services. Other costs of maintaining the home are supported by rent subsidies through Halton Region and through generous community support.

The length of time a resident lives in a Home Suite Hope house is largely dependent on the resident’s needs. The length of residency is tailored to encourage stability and progress. The initial program is eight months, and some residents find they are able to move on in that time period. If, at the end of eight months, a resident is thriving in the environment and making progress toward achieving his/her goals, but not yet ready for independent living for financial or other reasons, he/she may apply for a second or subsequent term, to be granted at the discretion of the Residents Committee of the Board. Therefore, the duration of residency ranges from a few months to a year or longer, depending on the needs of the resident.

While living in a Home Suite Hope home, all residents are engaged in an active life and participate in household management, encouraging a productive attitude toward life stabilization and long-term stable housing.

The resident selection process is based on the applicant’s need for transitional housing and a commitment to participate in a healthy group dynamic. This approach provides for both immediate shelter needs and the social and relational needs of individuals.

Some of our residents are employed. They are the working poor who cannot afford market rent.
